The University’s staff and students took part in the campaign. Food, children’s items, toiletries, clothes and other necessities for Shebekino residents who were forced to leave their homes were collected. The cargo was delivered to a temporary accommodation centre in Belgorod at the beginning of July.
The idea of the charity fundraiser was supported by: the administration of the Graduate School of Journalism and Mass Communication of St Petersburg University; the student council; and the information department.
‘I consider myself a great patriot of my small homeland − the Belgorod Region. I think that life will be better if every person who moves to capital cities to receive education remembers, respects, honours and makes the place where they come from better. It was with this belief in mind that I organised this campaign,’ Dmitrii Cherkashin shared. He added that the amount of collected aid exceeded expectations, so he had to make additional efforts to solve the issues of its delivery.
‘I would like to thank everyone who supported my fellow countrymen and my homeland at the most difficult moment in its contemporary history. When I delivered the boxes to the temporary accommodation centre, I received a lot of gratitude from complete strangers. Then, I realised that we had done more than just organising a giving campaign. We have made the lives of those who are going through a difficult time at least a little bit easier,’ Dmitrii Cherkashin concluded.
For reference: the University has also organised collecting centres for humanitarian aid for citizens who have been forced to leave the territory of the Donetsk People’s Republic, the Lugansk People’s Republic, and Ukraine. Working hours and addresses of collecting centres for humanitarian aid are the following:
