Orphan diseases are those that affect fewer than ten people out of every 100,000. In the Russian Federation, there are only a few doctors who specialise in treating such diseases. One of them is Elena Belonogova, a paediatrician, neurologist, and nutritionist from the Paediatric Traumatology Department. Due to her efforts, field consultations are regularly conducted for children all over Russia, including Chechnya, Dagestan, Ingushetia, Siberia, Buryatia, Karelia, and the Kaliningrad Region.
The doctor provides patronage to orphans with rare diseases. Not only does she organise the provision of medical dressings, examinations, and medical procedures but also participates in the search for new foster parents for these ‘special’ children. Additionally, she assists kids who require urgent help from highly qualified doctors in getting hospitalised at the Pirogov Clinic at St Petersburg University.
Elena Belonogova is a member of the Union of Paediatricians of Russia, co-founder and coordinator of the charitable project ‘Star Country’, an expert of the charitable foundations ‘They need you’, ‘Prospects’ and ‘BELA. Butterfly children’. In 2022, Elena Belonogova was recognised as the best in the Children’s Doctor contest.
